MORGAN HILL -- A man was badly hurt on Monterey Road near Third Street after apparently reclining in the roadway and getting hit by a vehicle, according to Morgan Hill police.

The 27-year-old man was found unconscious in the street around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday and was taken to a trauma center with major injuries to his head and body, police said. Witnesses told investigators that the man had been walking in the street and then laid down in one of the lanes for unknown reasons.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the man stopped at the scene, did not appear intoxicated and is cooperating with investigators.
