RICHMOND -- Police expect to charge a 36-year-old Stockton woman with vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI and child endangerment "at the very least" following a Thursday night accident that killed her 39-year-old boyfriend and critically injured two children.

Chanetta Flanagan was driving a white sedan south on San Pablo Avenue between Hilltop Drive and Stanton Avenue around 11:45 p.m. Thursday when she veered to the right and struck a tree, according to Richmond Police Lt. Andre Hill.

The force of the collision crushed the roof of the car and killed Harold Mason Jr. of Richmond, Hill said. Mason was declared dead at the scene, Hill said.

Two girls, ages 3 and 5, were sitting in the back seat. The 3-year-old was in a car seat, but the 5-year-old was not, Hill added. Both were listed in critical condition at Children's Hospital Oakland with major injuries. Hill said Friday that the 3-year-old's condition has been upgraded to stable, while the 5-year-old's condition has not changed.

Flanagan was also injured and was at an area hospital recovering Saturday and in police custody.

"I don't know if the DA will add more charges or enhancements," Hill said. "This definitely could have been avoided. She already had a suspended license for DUI-related charges."
