SAN MATEO -- A San Mateo man was arrested after he allegedly robbed a teenage girl at gunpoint in her backyard Wednesday, police said.
No one was injured.
Around 5:40 p.m., San Mateo officers responded to the 3200 block of Verdun Avenue for reports of an armed robbery.
The victim, a 16-year-old girl, told police while she was inside her home at her dining room table when she saw a man, later identified as 22-year-old Matthew Nguyen, standing a few feet away in her backyard, pointing what appeared to be a black handgun directly at her and demanding money.
The teen's father came down from the second floor in the house when he heard his daughter scream, and immediately called 911.
The teen gave Nguyen a small amount of cash, who then fled the backyard before police arrived.
But officers quickly found and detained Nguyen, who had a realistic-looking airsoft pistol and other suspected evidence linking him to the crime.
Nguyen was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery, and police believe the crime was an isolated incident.
The investigation is ongoing. Detectives are also working to figure out if Nguyen has been involved in other crimes.
