SAN MATEO -- Police quickly nabbed a suspect Wednesday evening after a teenage girl was robbed while standing in her own dining room by a man with a replica pistol peering at her from her back yard.
San Mateo police massed in the area of the 3200 block of Verdun Avenue around 5:40 p.m. after the 16-year-old girl's father called 911 after hearing her scream. The girl told officers that she was just inside her home near the dining room table when she was startled to see a man a few feet away outside, pointing what looked like a real handgun at her and demanding money.
He took a small amount of cash and fled, and more than 20 officers canvassed the area. Residents were called and warned to stay inside and keep an eye out for the suspect.
Less than 20 minutes later, San Mateo police took 22-year-old San Mateo resident Matthew Nguyen into custody. He was wearing clothes that matched the suspect, had a realistic-looking Airsoft pistol and other evidence linking him to the robbery.
Police believe it was an isolated incident with no other involved suspects. Charges are pending, and detectives are looking into whether Nguyen may be involved in other crimes.
