Not so surprisingly, lots of people watched the Oscars on Sunday night.

The 2014 Academy Awards had 40.2 million viewers and 12.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, according to early Nielsen numbers. These figures are subject to change.

Despite Ellen DeGeneres taking selfies and ordering pizza, ratings for Sunday's show were roughly the same as in the previous year, when host Seth MacFarlane's controversial antics generated plenty of criticism. The 2013 Oscars brought in more than 40 million viewers and a 13 rating in the 18-49 demographic.

DeGeneres was seen as a safer host than MacFarlane. Online reviews of her performance were fairly positive. And her "selfie" stunt -- involving several celebs in the audience -- reportedly crashed Twitter for a short time.

"I thought it would crash," DeGeneres told E!'s Marc Malkin about the gag. "But I didn't know everyone would do it. What's funny is that Lupita (Nyong'o's) brother is the most prominent. And then Jared came running over to be in it. And Angie got it in. I didn't expect all that."

It was the selfie heard 'round the world. Who knew celebrities like getting their picture taken?
