SAN JOSE -- A fire that broke out in the bedroom of a Cambrian Park condominium claimed the life of a small dog, but two residents escaped unscathed, according to fire officials.

The fire on Lakebird Court was reported at 3:24 p.m., and arriving crews found smoke coming out of a second-floor window, one of four units in the building.

"We upgraded the call to a second alarm because it was a multiunit condominium," said San Jose fire Capt. Rob Brown. Crews found the dog deceased from apparent smoke inhalation, Brown said.

A cause of the fire was not immediately apparent. None of the other three units was affected, Brown said.

Another fire broke out Monday morning, on Burchell Court in the Almaden neighborhood, officials said. In that case, a family of two adults and two children were displaced.

The fire burned the garage, but the house was uninhabitable due to smoke damage, Brown said.
