SANTA CLARA -- Patrols have been stepped up in the area around Santa Clara University after four people were held at gunpoint -- and one pushed to the ground and pistol-whipped -- in two robberies minutes apart early Saturday, police said.

The first call was for a robbery at Schott Field, 443 El Camino Real on the east side of campus at 1 a.m. Three men approached the victim in the parking lot and demanded his property, with two of them brandishing handguns. The man gave them his cell phone and wallet and the robbers fled.

At about 1:13 a.m., police received word that three other victims were robbed in the area of Park Avenue and Mission Street, less than half a mile away. Those victims were approached by three gunmen who demanded their property. At that point, one of the victims was "forced to the ground and struck on the face with a handgun," police said.

They robbers took a cell phone and wallet from one of the victims before fleeing.

The men were all described as black and about 25 years old. One was 5-foot-10 to 6 feet tall and medium build, with short hair, possibly a dark green jacket, dark jeans and armed with a black handgun. The other two wore black hooded sweatshirts and baggy black jeans.

Anyone with information about the robberies is asked to call Sgt. Hoising at 408-615-4814.
