HAYWARD -- A pedestrian fatally hit by a pickup truck last week near the South Hayward BART station has been identified by police as 40-year-old Robert Gonsalves.
Gonsalves, a transient known to frequent Hayward, Pleasanton and San Francisco, was struck in a 6:45 p.m. crash Feb. 27 near the intersection of Mission Boulevard and Tennyson Road, police said.
Officers found Gonsalves unresponsive and lying in the road in front of a white Ford Ranger pickup in the northbound Mission Boulevard lanes, Sgt. Chad Olthoff said.
He was taken to a hospital and was listed in critical condition until he died Friday morning, police said.
The pickup was traveling north on Mission Boulevard at 35 mph when it arrived at the intersection of Mission Boulevard and Tennyson Road. When the truck passed through the intersection, Gonsalves left the center median, stepped several feet outside the crosswalk and walked directly in front of the pickup, police said.
Police were still investigating why Gonsalves walked into oncoming traffic; it appeared that alcohol or drugs may have been a factor, police said.
The driver of the pickup was cooperating with the police. As of Tuesday no charges had been filed.
