HAYWARD -- The Emergency Shelter Program has a new name -- Ruby's Place.
The change was done for two reasons, the organization said in a release. What started out as an emergency shelter for female and child victims of domestic abuse more than 40 years ago has evolved. It now also has counseling, employment help, a housing program and community outreach, including legal assistance for restraining orders and visas.
Also, a federal program that had granted funds to the group had a similar name, the Emergency Shelter Grants program. It was recently replaced by the federal Emergency Solutions Grants program.
Ruby is the name of a woman who called the shelter for help after she and her children were abused for years, according to the website.
