SAN JOSE -- Bellarmine College Prep's defense made Christian Aldama's early goal hold up in a 1-0 win over Homestead on Wednesday in a Central Coast Section Division I boys soccer semifinal at Pioneer.
Aldama took a pass from Ruben Maynes in front of the net in the 11th minute and chipped it in, giving the Bells (18-3-4) the only goal they needed against the upstart Mustangs (16-6-1).
Bellarmine's back-row players -- Aldama, Remy Arnold, Austin Chun, and Elliott Jobson and Austin Chun -- went to work, keeping Homestead on the outside and away from the goal for much of the game.
"Simply put, our defense is great," Bells coach Patrick Lowney said. "We've got fast, athletic, well-skilled, smart players who anchor our team."
The Bells will face Watsonville, a 4-0 winner over Carlmont on Wednesday, in the section title match at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Westmont.
The Mustangs entered the playoffs as a No. 6 seed but beat No. 3 Alvarez en route to the semifinals and played evenly with Bellarmine after giving up the early goal.
Marc Rivera scored the game-clinching goal in the 66th minute as Gilroy defeated Overfelt 3-2 at Pioneer. The Mustangs (15-4-3) will face Serra (16-2-4), a 3-1 winner over Leigh, in Saturday's final. In Serra's game, Michael Neher had a goal and an assist to help the Padres reach their first CCS final.
Half Moon Bay defeated Aptos 5-2 to advance to Saturday's 6 p.m. final at Westmont.
