OAKLAND -- A 24-year-old man was shot to death Wednesday night in the East Oakland neighborhood where he used to live, police said.
Police responding to reports of gunfire found Jacob Velasquez about 10:36 p.m. in the 2500 block of 11th Avenue, near Bella Vista Elementary School.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officer Phong Tran said Thursday that Velasquez was living in another part of Oakland but still had friends in the neighborhood where he was shot and may have gone there to visit them.
No motive has been established and no arrests have been made, police said.
Police said they were told by relatives that Velasquez worked as a security guard for a hospital. He had lived in Dublin before and played football and baseball at Dublin High School, police said they were told.
The killing was Oakland's 21st homicide of the year. Last year at this time there were 16 homicides in the city.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the killer. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
