OAKLAND -- The computer lab at Joaquin Miller Elementary School is temporarily closed after burglars stole more than two dozen iMacs and their monitors worth $35,000 early Thursday, authorities said.
School district spokesman Troy Flint said the burglars removed a grating on a lab window about 2 a.m. Thursday and then were able to dismantle locks that secured the computers to desks.
Flint said the computers were paid for by money raised by the school's Parent Teacher Organization.
He said some students lost class work stored on the computers while others had a backup flash drive.
Flint said the burglars "not only deprived students of their computers, they are also interfering with the students' education."
School officials were working to find funds to replace the computers as soon as possible.
The school is at 5525 Ascot Drive, next to Montera Middle School.
