SAN LEANDRO -- A man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and vehicular manslaughter Saturday night after a car crash in San Leandro left his passenger dead, authorities said.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken into custody after he crashed his Acura Integra into a Chevy Camaro about 11:20 p.m. at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Castro Street, according to San Leandro police Lt. Robert McManus. His passenger, an Oakland man in his late 20s or early 30s, was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The suspect was also injured in the crash, McManus said, and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities believe he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, and detained him on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.

The driver of the Camaro was the only person in that car, said McManus, and he was not injured.

"This is a tragic loss," McManus said. "Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the man who lost his life in this senseless act."

The suspect is expected to appear in Alameda County Superior Court in Hayward either Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon, McManus said. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact the San Leandro Police Department's Traffic Division at 510-577-3208.
