SAN LEANDRO -- A man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and suspicion of vehicular manslaughter Saturday night after a car crash in San Leandro killed his cousin, who was his passenger, authorities said.
The suspect, Sergio Hernandez Flores, 24, of Oakland, was taken into custody after he crashed his Acura Integra into a Chevy Camaro about 11:20 p.m. at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Castro Street, said San Leandro police Lt. Robert McManus. His passenger, Juan Jesus Ornelas Flores, 30, of Oakland was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The suspect was also injured in the crash and remained hospitalized late Sunday, authorities said. His condition was not available Sunday night.
The driver of the Camaro, a 44-year-old man from San Lorenzo, was the only person in that car, said McManus, and he was not injured.
Sergio Flores is expected to appear in Alameda County Superior Court in Hayward later this week, McManus said. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact the San Leandro Police Department's Traffic Division at 510-577-3208.
