SAN MATEO -- An 8-year-old girl was hit Friday morning by a car at an elementary school, according to the San Mateo police and school officials.

The girl, who was hit at 7:40 a.m. as many students were being dropped off, was alert and talking when she was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening injuries, police and school officials said in a joint news release.

The news release said it appeared the driver of a gold Toyota Corolla who hit the girl was not following the proper procedures for dropping off children at Horrall Elementary School in the 900 block of Ocean View Avenue. The 38-year-old driver was cited for driving without a license, and was released.

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor, according to the news release.

The drop-off period at the school is a busy time.

"The details and conclusions of the traffic collision are still under investigation," the news release said.

The San Mateo-Foster City School District sent additional school psychologists to the school, police and school officials said.
