HAYWARD -- A plaque honoring Sgt. 1st Class James Grissom will be unveiled March 21, the first anniversary of his death from combat injuries in Afghanistan.
A tree in Grissom's memory is being planted near the fountain in front of City Hall. The Green Beret grew up in Hayward and was a 1999 graduate of Mount Eden High School. As members of the school's choir, he and his sister, Becca Grissom, sang on the steps of the rotunda at the dedication of City Hall in 1998, said his father, Jim Grissom.
The tree being planted is a liquid amber. "It's kind of cool, because that was James' favorite tree," his father said.
The plaque unveiling and tree dedication are open to the public; the ceremony begins at 10 a.m. March 21 in front of City Hall, 777 B St.
