The woman returned to her home about noon Monday and found a man burglarizing her home on Edinburgh Street, San Mateo police Spokesman David Norris said. Theburglar, who was wearing a black zip-up sweatshirt and beanie, tied her up and confined her to her home while he accessed her bank account several times over the next 24 hours.
The woman was eventually able to break free and call police, who took her to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Officers scanned the woman's home for evidence, as well as her neighborhood for any witnesses.
The burglar is described as a Latino about 30 years old, standing 5 feet 10 inches tall with a medium build. He was armed with a handgun and was described as having medium length hair with a wave at the end.
Police are calling the burglary an isolated incident and believe it began as a crime of opportunity because the house was unoccupied.
"This incident unfortunately occurred because an unknowing victim was surprised to return home to a stranger in her residence," Norris said. "If you arrive home and anything seems amiss, back out if you can, go to a safe place and call police immediately."
