Leave it to Gwyneth Paltrow to give her marriage a very Hollywood send-off.

The actress and husband Chris Martin, lead singer of Coldplay, announced their separation Tuesday on her website Goop, calling it a "Conscious Uncoupling."

"It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate," the couple wrote. "We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate."

The couple said they hope for privacy as they "consciously uncouple and coparent" their two children, Apple and Moses.

Last year, Paltrow stirred up tabloid reports when emails surfaced in which she asked her celebrity friends to boycott Vanity Fair because the magazine planned to run a cover story without her permission. Radar Online said that story would have detailed an affair the actress had with entertainment lawyer Kevin Yorn. Despite her campaign, the alleged affair was widely reported by gossip sites and tabloids.

Paltrow and Martin married in December 2003.
