BAY AREA -- Rain is expected to move into the region Monday and continue through Tuesday, bringing brief heavy rains, cooler weather and a possible dusting of snow on area peaks, according to the National Weather Service.

On Monday, rain will affect the evening commute, and strong gusty winds between 30-40 mph will accompany the heavy rains as the system passes over the area, the weather service said.

A slight chance of thunderstorms is forecast Monday night and into Tuesday, with small hail possible during heavier rainfall.

Cooler weather will also move in with the storm system Monday night. Rainfall totals are expected to be from a half-inch to an inch in the lower elevations, with snow levels dropping to 3,500 feet, noted the weather service. That could mean a dusting of snow on area peaks.

Daytime temperatures will be unseasonably cool, mostly in the upper 50s, the weather service said.
