HAYWARD -- A Hayward man has been convicted of attempted murder for shooting a childhood friend over a $300 marijuana debt outside his family home on Newhall Street in 2011.
The same Alameda County jury that convicted 22-year Nateel Sharma on Thursday convicted the man's 20-year-old sister Neshal Sharma of being an accessory to murder after the fact for driving him away from the shooting scene in a failed attempt to avoid police.
Prosecutor Adam Maldonado says about 10 people saw Nateel Sharma shoot the 19-year-old victim in the stomach with a shotgun at close range. The victim, he said, suffered a "softball-sized hole" in his stomach and was lucky to have survived the shooting.
The Sharmas are scheduled to be sentenced July 25. Nateel Sharma is facing life in prison and his sister could get up to three years.
