OAKLAND -- Police are investigating the city's 26th homicide of the year after a woman's body was found outside the Francis Marion Smith Recreational Center early Saturday.
Around 6:39 a.m., police responded to the 1900 block of 3rd Avenue on reports of a woman's body on the ground.
According to police, a passing bicyclist noticed the woman, who appears to have suffered a head trauma. The woman has only been identified as a 23-year-old, but her name, city of residence and information on a suspect or possible motives were not immediately available.
Homicide detectives arrived at the scene shortly before 10 a.m. and are continuing to investigate. Police have blocked off Third Avenue from the park where the woman's body was found in front of the center to Wayne Avenue.
Sgt. Randy Brandwood said police are trying to determine if the woman was killed where she was found of if she was killed elsewhere and taken to the recreation center and left there.
Crime Stoppers is offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter in the slaying. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572 or police at 510-238-3821.
