BERKELEY -- Nine days after Mike Montgomery announced his retirement, Cal associate head coach Travis DeCuire and UC Irvine head coach Russell Turner have been confirmed as candidates to replace him, but all else is basically guesswork in a process with a tight lid on news.

"If anybody tells you they know anything, they're lying," a source at Cal said Wednesday.

That's because athletic director Sandy Barbour is not using a committee to make the selection but is working solely with chancellor Nicholas Dirks and vice chancellor John Wilton.

Others whose names have been mentioned recently in the search include former Cal aide and current Arizona associate head coach Joe Pasternack, and one-time Warriors and Kings coach Eric Musselman, who on Monday resigned his assistant coaching job at Arizona State.
