MENLO PARK -- The two people killed in a Highway 101 car crash in Menlo Park early Saturday were identified as Gaudi Salgado Barrios, of East Palo Alto, and Taufa Toutai Pupunu, of Redwood City.

Officers responded about 1:41 a.m. to the crash on southbound 101 near the Willow Road off-ramp and discovered a red Toyota sedan had crashed into a tree, CHP Officer Art Montiel said. The driver, 26-year-old Barrios, and her passenger, 27-year-old Pupunu, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said Barrios was speeding when she failed to make a right turn onto the off-ramp. The Toyota continued straight and struck one tree before ricocheting off and hitting a second tree.

"They were not ejected from the car, as they were wearing seat belts," Montiel said. "But the impact was just too great."

In addition to speed, an odor at the scene led investigators to believe alcohol may have played a role in the crash, according to the CHP. Toxicology reports had not been completed as of Monday afternoon.

Anyone with information on the crash can contact CHP officer Vincent Pompliano at 650-369-6261. The investigation is ongoing.
