OAKLAND -- A man killed April 26 by a hit-and-run driver in the Temescal district of North Oakland was identified by the coroner's office Friday as William August Hoch Jr., 68.

Hoch, who lived in the area, was struck about 7:35 a.m. April 26 in the southbound lanes of traffic in the 5000 block of Telegraph Avenue. He was thrown at least 50 feet by the impact. It was not known if he was in a crosswalk.

The driver who hit him got out of his vehicle to check on him briefly, but then got back in and drove off, police said. Hoch was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Police said they believe the suspect was possibly driving a white Audi or Infiniti SUV.

The manager of the apartment building on Claremont Avenue where Hoch was living said he had been a resident there since 2002. He said he knew little of Hoch's background.

The coroner's office did not have an occupation for Hoch.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the driver. Anyone with information may call police at 510-777-8570 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
