Jose Avila, 77, has been missing since Monday evening.

NEWARK -- An elderly man reported missing while taking a walk on Monday was back with his family after police found him Tuesday morning.

Police located Jose Avila, 77, around 6:35 a.m. after a motorist saw him outside a Wal-Mart on Albrae Street, Newark police Sgt. Ray Hoppe said. That person gave Avila a ride to a Starbucks, where police met him.

"He has no recollection how he got there," Hoppe said. Avila was OK, and was given food at Starbucks.

Avila went for his daily walk around 6:45 p.m. on Monday but never returned, police said. Normally, Avila walks around the area of Birch Grove Park and Byington Park. Birch Grove Park is located in the 38000 block of Birch Street, while Byington Park is located on Byington Drive and Central Avenue.

The Wal-Mart where the motorist saw Avila is about three miles from there.

"He went a long way from where he usually goes," Hoppe said.
