OAKLAND -- Jury deliberations began Thursday at the murder trial for a 30-year-old man accused of fatally shooting two men in a West Oakland neighborhood in 2010 for no apparent reason.
The defense attorney for DeShawn Reed says the Oakland resident has been misidentified as the gunman who killed 29-year-old Victor Johns and 56-year-old John Jones in a brazen afternoon shooting on March 5, 2010 at 30th and Linden streets.
But the prosecution said Reed was seen getting out of a black Saturn and killing the two Oakland residents in front of witnesses before fleeing in the vehicle.
The driver, Jason Watts, was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder last year and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Reed faces the same punishment if convicted.
