OAKLAND -- A 28-year-old Hayward man was badly injured in a crash on Interstate 580 Friday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of the Buick was traveling west on I-580 at about 9:30 a.m. when he lost control, went off the road and hit a tree near 14th Avenue in Oakland, the CHP said. He lost consciousness after the crash and was taken to an Oakland hospital with major injuries, authorities said.
Witnesses said the man and a driver of a silver Chevrolet Camaro were driving recklessly before the Buick crashed, CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said. Both drivers may have been involved in an earlier hit-and-run crash on Oakland city streets, Wilkenfeld said.
