SUNNYVALE -- A would-be burglar's gun discharged during a fight with a homeowner after the resident caught the man inside his home Monday morning, police said.
Shortly before noon, Sunnyvale police responded to a report of a burglary that was interrupted by a resident when he heard someone trying to get into his home on the 900 block of East El Camino Real.
According to police, the homeowner told officers he confronted one of two suspects, who upon seeing the home was occupied ran off. The homeowner followed and the two eventually began fighting. During the fight, police said, the suspect displayed a handgun, which then went off, sending one round into a metal railing.
The suspect got into a red, newer model Mercedes-Benz SUV with white lettering on the back window. The car, which was being driven by another man, sped off eastbound on El Camino Real.
The resident was not injured, police added.
The suspect who fought the homeowner is described as a Hispanic man in his 20s with a light mustache, roughly 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build. He was wearing dark jeans.
The second suspect is described as a black man in his 20s, roughly 5 feet 7 inches tall. He was wearing a black hat, a black shirt with a white shirt underneath and dark jeans.
