GILROY -- A 34-year-old man suspected of striking a female pedestrian on Friday night and driving away walked into the police department Sunday and gave officers an account of what happened.
Police did not provide specifics of what the man said, but he was not arrested, according to Gilroy police Sgt. Pedro Espinoza.
Police are not releasing the driver's name, nor are they explaining why he wasn't arrested.
When police complete their investigation they will turn their findings over to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office. Once prosecutors review the file, they will decide whether to file charges.
On Friday night at 9:56 p.m., police responded the intersection of 10th and Rosanna streets and found the woman suffering major injuries. The 24-year-old Gilroy woman was taken to a local trauma center, where she is currently in stable condition and recovering from her injuries, Espinoza said.
The man was driving a full-size, champagne-colored SUV.
