Three-day ticket packages have gone on sale for the Monterey Jazz Festival, Sept. 19-21 at the Monterey County Fairgrounds.
The Roots are among the headliners, as is blues-rocker Gary Clark Jr. But go for the jazz. This year's festival includes a clutch of top pianists: Herbie Hancock, Jason Moran, Harold Mabern, Donald Brown, Robert Glasper, Billy Childs (with a tribute to Laura Nyro), Aaron Diehl, Jon Batiste, Ellis Marsalis and Geoffrey Keezer. Wow.
And there's more: Bassist Christian McBride will perform (in a "Philadelphia Experiment" band with ?uestlove, Uri Caine and Booker T. Jones).
Other headliners will include saxophonists Charles Lloyd and Melissa Aldana, singers Michael Feinstein and Cecile McLorin Salvant, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis and drummers Brian Blade and Eric Harland. There's still more; expect wall-to-wall music through the weekend.
Three-day passes are $290-$335 for Arena shows, or $125 ($50 for youths 3-18) for the many shows out on the fairgrounds. Tickets: 888-248-6499, www.montereyjazzfestival.org.
