OAKLAND -- Firefighters tackled a one-alarm fire Friday afternoon at an apartment building near the intersection of Mead Avenue and Market streets in West Oakland, a dispatcher said.

Crews were sent just before 12:30 p.m. to the two-story building in the 800 block of Mead Avenue after someone reported heavy smoke coming from the structure, the dispatcher said.

The fire was brought under control by 12:37 p.m., a fire official said.

It was not known if anyone was injured, but a fire spokeswoman said all the residents inside the building were evacuated.
