SAN LEANDRO -- When San Leandro High's Gabriella Cantrell heard her winning time in the girls 100 meters Saturday at the West Alameda County Conference Track and Field Championships, her happiness was apparent.

"Oh good. Great. Finally," said Cantrell, smiling broadly after hearing her time was 11.79 seconds. "I've been practicing so good, but it hasn't come together in a race yet."

Entering this weekend, only four high school girls in the state had run faster than that wind-aided time this season under any conditions according to DyeStatCal.com. Cantrell, who placed third in both the 100 and 200 in last year's CIF state championships, was unable to sprint in practice until April 14 due to a torn left hamstring suffered in mid-March. She also won the 200 in 24.45 (wind-legal) and anchored the Pirates' 400 relay team to victory at Burrell Field.

Castro Valley's Nate Moore won the boys long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 4 1/2 inches after earning the triple jump title on Thursday. Moore, the defending CIF state champion in both events, ended up only taking four of his six attempts due to a busy schedule which included the 400 relay and the 100. He said he is dropping the 100 after this meet.

"To me, these meets are helping me to work with fatigue," Moore said.

Bishop O'Dowd won the boys championship meet team title on the final lap of the last event of the meet. Joshua Hall, a sophomore, made a big move into the lead on his anchor leg of the 1600 relay for an O'Dowd victory in 3:28.04. The Dragons won the boys title by one point over Castro Valley (117-116).

"I was just thinking I've got to try and win," said Hall about what was going through his mind on his anchor leg. He started his leg one second behind leader San Leandro.

The Bishop O'Dowd girls won the WACC championship meet team title by 18 points over Castro Valley (165-147). Like the boys squad, the O'Dowd girls received a number of big performances, including a first-through-fourth finish in the 3200 led by Julia Cooke (11:26.71).

Castro Valley's Kennedy Jones was the only athlete to win three individual events. After earning the girls triple jump title on Thursday, Jones won the long jump (17-9 3/4) and 300 low hurdles (48.51) on Saturday.

Hayward's Daniel Turner ruled the boys hurdle events. He won the 110 high hurdles by .90 with a time of 15.67, then took first in the 300 intermediate hurdles by .14 with a time of 42.09.

The San Leandro boys 400 relay team of Carl Nash, Andre Alexander, Tavian Anderson and Stephen Johnson won their event with a time of 42.11 seconds. Entering this weekend, no NCS team had run faster than 42.14 according to DyeStatCal.com. Anderson later won the 400 in 49.57 and Alexander won the 100 in 10.93 (wind-legal).

Besides its victory in the 1600 relay, the Bishop O'Dowd boys received wins from sophomore Nick Downs in the 1600 (4:27.30) and Austin Carrington-Scott in the 800 (1:57.35) on Saturday. Besides Cooke in the 3200, the O'Dowd girls received victories from Emily Fieberling in the 1600 (5:19.22), Kara Awakoaiye in the 100 hurdles (14.69), Alison Heywood in the 400 (59.11), Lauren Petry in the high jump (4-8), and the 1600 relay team of Kaelyn Shirley, Heywood, Awakoaiye and Fieberling (4:06.16).
