Some farms around East Contra Costa County are already open to do-it-yourselfers who want to eat their strawberries right off the vine and pick cherries, although Memorial Day weekend is traditionally when the U-pick season heats up.

Other fruits and vegetables that are typically be ripe for the picking at some point this month range from apricots, peaches and nectarines to cucumbers, green beans and squash. But be sure to call farms or check online before making the drive to make sure Mother Nature hasn't upset the apple cart.
