SAN MATEO -- A worker died after he fell from the top of a wall of a townhome at a residential construction site Tuesday afternoon, a police department spokesman said.

Around 3:40 p.m., the man, who has not been identified, fell 15 feet from the top of a wall he was helping to construct on a townhouse building, said San Mateo police Sgt. David Norris. Despite attempts to revive the man, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The construction site, located on the 2900 block of McCown Avenue, is the site of the former Bay Meadows racing track and is set to be turned into apartments and town homes, according to a website for TRI Pointe Homes, which runs the construction site.

A spokesperson for the real estate company was not available Tuesday night.

Cal/OSHA has opened an investigation into the incident.

"If the employer is found to have violated any workplace safety procedures they will be cited," said Greg Siggins, spokesman for the agency.
