BERKELEY -- A 39-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday on the UC Berkeley campus after she jumped on top of a man who was rummaging through her belongings and tried to stab him, police said.
UC Berkeley police arrested Baneka Flood about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday near the west steps of the Energy and Bioscience Building located between Oxford Street and Shattuck Avenue.
The 59-year-old man sustained cuts to his hands, police said. Neither the suspect nor the victim are Cal students.
Police said the man was walking near the bioscience building when he noticed a pile of miscellaneous items near the steps, and started rummaging through them. A few seconds later, Flood ran over and pushed him to the ground. When he got up, Flood pushed him down again and punched him, police said.
Police said the 200-pound woman then got on top of the victim and grabbed a knife from her pocket and tried to stab him "while making incoherent statements." The man grabbed the woman's hand to stop her and yelled for help.
