SAN JOSE -- A fire that started on a balcony spread through the rest of a second-story apartment near San Jose State on Saturday afternoon, but it appeared no one was home when it broke out, firefighters said.

The one-alarm fire was reported just after 3 p.m. in the 500 block of South Fourth Street, between William and Reed streets and a block south of the campus, San Jose fire Capt. Rob Brown said.

Firefighters arrived quickly and put the fire out in about 20 minutes. Brown said no one was home in either of the building's two upstairs units and that the fire was corralled to a single apartment, which sustained significant fire damage.

No injuries were reported. Brown said the fire appears to have originated on a left-side balcony but that an exact cause was under investigation.
