One person was arrested after leading officers on a chase through city streets and briefly Interstate 580 Monday night.

The chase began when the California Highway Patrol attempted to pull over a driver for a traffic violation near Madera Avenue at 7:33 p.m. Instead of slowing down, the driver sped up, prompting a chase, according to Officer Peter VanEckhardt, a CHP spokesman.

At one point, the getaway car drove onto Interstate 580, but then slowed and appeared as if he wanted to jump out of the vehicle, VanEckhardt said. A CHP helicopter assisted in the chase and the suspect eventually stopped near Bancroft and Fairfax avenues.

The driver was booked into Santa Rita Jail for outstanding warrants and evading police.
