SAN LEANDRO--The family of a San Leandro girl struck by a train in May will hold a memorial service to celebrate her life next weekend.
Brittney Silva, 18-year-old senior at San Leandro High, was killed by an Amtrak train May 19 as she was crossed the tracks near the intersection of Hesperian Boulevard and Springlake Drive. Silva was listening to music and may not have heard the oncoming train, authorities said.
The memorial will be held at 10 a.m. June 7 at the Union City Apostolic Church, located at 33700 Alvarado Niles Road.
Silva's death has served as the most recent wake-up call to teens and others about the dangers of being distracted by electronic gadgets. Authorities remind everyone to stay away from railroad property, not walk on tracks, not try to go around a crossing gate, and keep one ear attuned to your surroundings.
"You cannot beat a train," said Vernae Graham, a spokeswoman for Amtrak. "Your odds are stacked against you."
