SAN JOSE -- Verizon Communications has signed a lease at a just-renovated office building in North San Jose, where the firm could shift up to 700 employees, the telecommunications company and the project's developer said Tuesday.

New York City-based Verizon leased 136,000 square feet at the office complex known as The Campus, near the corner of Trimble Road and Orchard Parkway. The property is owned by developer Bixby Land.

"Verizon continues to see great talent in Silicon Valley, where we are expanding our presence and growing our new and emerging businesses," said Wallace Colyer, vice president of new product development for Verizon.

Bixby Land bought the complex in 2013 and spent $26 million on the upgrade, which transformed the center into a 250,000-square-foot office property. The Verizon lease was arranged by commercial realty brokerage CB Richard Ellis.

"We have been looking to expand our presence in Silicon Valley, and this will be a big part of that," said Raymond McConville, a Verizon spokesman. "This will be a big part of the next-generation services we are going to be developing in the coming years."

The renovation transformed the three-building San Jose complex into a state-of-the-art office center with amenities such as fire pits, bocce courts, an outdoor gourmet kitchen and outdoor eating and meeting areas. Verizon leased two of the three buildings. The third building is still available.

"We hope to provide an interesting opportunity at the offices for talented people with scientific, engineering, technical and math skills," McConville said.

Bixby has transformed several aging office buildings in San Jose and Santa Clara into modern office centers that attracted tech companies after the renovations. Bixby landed InfoBlox for a Santa Clara campus and Nimble Storage for a San Jose office complex.

In March, Bixby paid about $105 million for a seven-building office campus in Santa Clara a short distance from the San Francisco 49ers football stadium. It intends to spend $20 million in a sweeping upgrade of that project.

"The Campus offers progressive companies a dynamic office setting," said Bill Halford, president of Bixby Land.
