RICHMOND -- A man was shot in what police say was an attempted robbery Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting occurred at 4:20 p.m. in the 500 block of Fifth Street, when a young man approached another man who was standing in the garage area of a residence, according to Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov.

The two exchanged some words before the suspect fired one round, hitting the adult victim in the stomach.

The man was transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he was listed in critical condition.

Police believe the shooting is the result of a failed robbery. The suspect has not been apprehended; police did not have a detailed description of the man, who was in his 20s or 30s
