Philippine flag raising Saturday at City Hall
The annual flag raising ceremony to celebrate Philippine Independence Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Ave.
The free event is sponsored by the Alameda Philippine Independence Day Organizing Committee, the Alameda Center for Philippine Arts and the Alameda Sister City Association. For information, call Cynthia Bonta at 916-952-6006.
"Mary of Nazareth" screening on Sunday
St. Philip Neri-St. Albert the Great Parish is sponsoring a screening of "Mary of Nazareth" at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Alameda Theater & Cineplex, 2317 Central Ave.
Alissa Jung stars in the film, which was directed by Giacomo Campiotti and shot in Europe. The film is about the life of Mary, the mother of Christ. Tickets are available only through the parish office, 3101 Van Buren St. Call 510-373-5200 for information.
Fundraiser for school supplies ends Thursday
The Alameda Education Foundation is fundraising to purchase backpacks and other school supplies for 1,000 homeless, formerly homeless, or very low-income kindergartners through 12th-graders.
The goal is to raise $20,000 before Thursday, the last day of school, and to thus have the items ready when classes begin again in fall. The supplies will be distributed through the Alameda Unified School District's McKinney-Vento program, which serves homeless families; the Alameda Point Collaborative, which serves formerly homeless families; Alameda Head Start; the Alameda Boys & Girls Club; and Girls Inc. of the Island City.

USS Hornet set to host Father's Day activities
In honor of Father's Day, the USS Hornet Museum will present a special "Living Ship Day" from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 15 that will feature a children's magic show.
A traditional American barbecue also will be available for $10. The magic show will begin at 1 p.m. and feature Scott Alcalay, who has performed at Magic Castle in Hollywood. A Big Band will perform starting at 11 a.m. During Living Ship Days, museum visitors can experience what life was like aboard the aircraft carrier at sea.
Normal museum hours and admission prices will apply for the Father's Day event. The USS Hornet is permanently berthed at 707 W. Hornet Ave., Pier 3 in Alameda.
Meals on Wheels annual fundraiser to be July 20
The 18th annual Alameda Meals on Wheels Community Faire and Wine Tasting will take place July 20 at the Rock Walk Wine Company, 2301 Monarch St.
Along with wine and hors d'oeuvres, the event will feature a silent auction and live swing and jazz music by Three O'Clock Jump. This year's event, which will take place from 1 to 5 p.m., will honor the memory of Janice Lee, who was a volunteer and board member of the organization.
