A Bay Area News Group video that gave viewers a behind-the-scenes look at Circus Vargas has received a prestigious National Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association.

Photojournalist Dai Sugano shot "Magic in Motion'' when the circus came to Milpitas last August. With special backstage access, he captured images that most people never see, including a trio of young jugglers putting in a final practice, a tightrope walker refining complicated footwork, and trampoline acrobats stretching their muscles to the breaking point.

The video received the award for use of video in the large online news organization category.

"Sugano's passion for telling stories with strong, insightful and wellcrafted images make him an exceptional visual storyteller," said David J. Butler, editor and senior Vice President for news at BANG.

Sugano previously received a 2009 national Emmy Award for his documentary video work and has produced multimedia/video pieces on a variety of topics, including rising economic inequality in China; "Cost of Dying," a series on end of life care issues in the U.S.; poverty in India; and Hmong refugees who have immigrated to the U.S

"Magic in Motion'' was one of more than 4,000 entires in the 2014 RTDNA contest, which featured 13 categories such as overall excellence, breaking news and investigative reporting. Other news organizations winning Murrow awards included the Washington Post, Boston Globe, New York Times, ABC News, CBS News, NBC News and other television and radio networks and stations. Winners will be honored October 6 in New York City.
