ALAMEDA -- Anyone wishing to serve on the Alameda Health Care District board can now apply for the seat that Jordan Battani held before her resignation. The deadline to apply for the seat, one of five on the board, is June 20.
The individual appointed by the board will serve through November, when the seat will again become vacant and appear on the General Election ballot. The successful candidate in the election will serve out the remaining two years of Battani's term.
The board reviewed the appointment procedures June 4, when it set a July 22 deadline to select someone. The actual appointment, however, is expected to take place during the board's July 9 meeting.
Anyone wishing to apply can attend an "applicant conference" at 5:30 p.m. July 2 at the hospital. The idea behind the conference is to offer applicants an opportunity to learn about how the board works and the issues facing the hospital and district.
The successful applicant must be a resident and a registered voter in the district; not have been suspended or expelled from the Medicare program; and not have been convicted of a felony.
Applicants must submit a signed letter of interest, which should include their qualifications for the seat, a resume and the names and contact information of two references. Applicants also must disclose any potential conflict of interest with the district, plus must be willing to undergo a background check.
A health care consultant, Battani was on the board six years and was its president when she was re-elected in November 2012. Her May 23 resignation followed the board's decision to affiliate the hospital with the Alameda Health System, which took effect May 1. Battani, who helped negotiate the affiliation, said it was "a good time for a leadership transition" when she announced that she was stepping down.
The current board members are Tracy Jensen, Lynn Bratchett, J. Michael McCormick and Robert Deutsch. Along with Alameda Hospital, the Alameda Health System also includes San Leandro, Fairmont and Highland hospitals, and the John George Psychiatric Hospital.
For information on applying for the board seat, visit www.alamedahospital.org. or call the district clerk at 510-814-4001. Application packages should be mailed to the City of Alameda Health Care District, Attn.: District Clerk, 2070 Clinton Ave., Alameda, California, 94501.
