A suspected marijuana ring operating in Fremont, Union City and Hayward was busted this month, with four arrests and hundreds of pot plants, cash and other drugs seized, officials said Thursday.
During a nearly monthlong investigation, agents recovered 691 marijuana plants, nearly 2 1/2 pounds of marijuana, 5 grams of suspected cocaine, $22,183 in cash and a 2014 Honda Odyssey, the Southern Alameda County Major Crimes Task Force said.
Earlier this month, Union City Police Department patrol officers received information regarding a large-scale illegal marijuana operation, authorities said. The information was referred to the task force, which is comprised by officers from the California Department of Justice, Fremont, Union City, Newark, Alameda County Probation and the California Highway Patrol.
On June 11, the investigation concluded after agents executed five search warrants in Hayward, Union City and Fremont and arrested the four suspects: Fremont residents Tung Low, 39; Justin Chen, 37; Hui Zhu Zhao, 33; and San Leandro resident Pang Chan, 41.
Homes searched were on the 45900 block of Sentinel Place in Fremont, the 2700 block of Breaker Lane in Hayward, the 1000 block of Boyle Street in Union City, the 30500 block of Mallorca Way in Union City and the 31300 block of Beacon Bay Drive in Union City.
During the search at the Fremont house, agents seized nearly 3 ounces of marijuana, 5 grams of suspected cocaine, $1,294 in cash, two computers, three cellular phones, an electronic money counter and drug paraphernalia. Agents also said the home was being converted into a marijuana growing facility and contained ballasts, lights and growing equipment.
Chen was arrested on suspicion of cultivation of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sales, grand theft of utility power and possession of cocaine. Low was also arrested at the home on suspicion of possession of cocaine.
At the Breaker Lane residence in Hayward, agents seized 492 marijuana plants, about 2 pounds of processed marijuana, $660 in US currency, two cellular phones and drug paraphernalia. The residence contained 56 ballasts with 56 lights containing 1000 watt bulbs and marijuana growing equipment. Agents also found that the electrical line to the residence had been illegally bypassed.
Zhao was arrested at the home on suspicion of cultivation of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sales.
At the Boyle Street home in Union City, agents seized 199 marijuana plants, $20,229 in cash, a 2014 Honda Odyssey, a cellular phone and drug paraphernalia. The home had 23 ballasts with 23 lights containing 1000 watt bulbs and marijuana growing equipment. Chan was arrested at the house on suspicion of cultivation of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sales.
During a search of the Mallorca Way house authorities said agents seized drug paraphernalia.
