GILROY -- A 24-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot Thursday night in an incident that may have been gang-related, according to police.

The shooting happened at 7:18 p.m. in the 7200 block of Carmel Street, according to police. When officers arrived, they found the man suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

The man was airlifted to a trauma center where he was listed in critical condition Friday.

Witnesses told police two males fled east on Eight Street away from the shooting scene. Both were seen wearing black-hooded sweatshirts and remain at large.

Preliminary information revealed a verbal exchange may have preceded the shooting, which may have been motivated by gang affiliation, police said.
