SUNNYVALE -- A Sunnyvale man is on the run after police said he stabbed his girlfriend and kidnapped his daughter, who was safely returned home a short time later.

Around 9:40 p.m. Thursday, Sunnyvale officers responded to a report of a stabbing on the 500 block of North Britton Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a 33- year-old woman who had been stabbed several times. The woman was taken to an area hospital where she was treated and later released.

Officers also learned while they were investigating the stabbing that an 8-year-old girl had been taken from the home. The man who took the child, 44-year-old Jose Luis Valencia, was the girl's father and the estranged boyfriend of the stabbing victim, police said.

Before leaving the home, Valencia threatened to harm his daughter and to commit suicide, according to police.

Although an Amber Alert was briefly issued, officers were able to get in touch with members of Valencia's family, who convinced him to allow the girl to be safely brought back to her mother.

Valencia remains on the run Friday night, and police said he is considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information on Valencia's whereabouts is asked to notify the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety at 408-730-7101.
