BELMONT -- A Southern California man found hiding on the roof of a Belmont business Saturday was arrested on assault charges after attacking two friends and two police officers, authorities said.

Laguna Niguel resident Stephen Ricketts, 25, was booked into San Mateo County Jail after he assaulted two acquaintances at about 10:30 p.m., Capt. Pat Halleran said.

Ricketts reportedly was drinking with the unidentified men from Belmont and San Mateo when he attacked them in the 500 block of Mountain View Avenue.

The 54-year-old Belmont man was hospitalized with serious injuries, Halleran said. The San Mateo man was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Police enlisted the help of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Air Squadron to scan the area for Ricketts and he was found about 11 p.m. on the roof of an adjacent business.

According to Halleran, Ricketts fought officers when they tried to arrest him and he had to be restrained and flown from the roof on an aerial ladder.

Both Ricketts and two police officers suffered minor injuries in the incident, Halleran said. Ricketts was booked into jail on several charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and battery on a police officer.
