OAKLAND -- A woman shot to death Tuesday night outside her East Oakland home has been identified by relatives as Lanedria Grant, 47, who they described as a loving mother and grandmother.

A 31-year-old man also wounded in the shooting was recovering. His name has not been released by police.

Relatives of Grant said she was the mother of five, grandmother of nine and the aunt of Oscar Grant III, fatally shot by former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle at the Fruitvale BART Station on New Year's Day 2009.

Relatives said the good weather on Tuesday night brought many people outside, including children and older residents, when a gunman opened fire about 6:45. p.m. in the 600 block of Douglas Avenue in the Brookfield Village area.

Bertrina Grant-Works, of Oakland, the dead woman's sister, said the family cannot think of a reason why anyone would want to shoot her. She does not know the name of the man wounded or if her sister knew him.

"I really can't explain the loss. Everyone is very hurt," Grant-Works said.

Lanedria Grant's son, Anthony Holly, 28, of Reno, said in a phone call what happened to his mother "is not fair and it's not right. I have two daughters and now my mom is not going to see them grow up."

Grant died at the scene. The gunman apparently fled in a car.

Police have not released a motive or said who they think was the intended target.

Grant-Works said the family is in the process of setting up a fund to pay for funeral expenses.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $15,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the shooter. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
