OAKLAND -- A trial began Wednesday for a Berkeley man who fatally stabbed a 26-year-old woman in an East Oakland apartment in 2012.
An attorney for 36-year-old Jamaal Prince told jurors that his client killed 26-year-old Jennifer "Jessica" Kingeter in self-defense, and he will be asking for a manslaughter conviction at the trial's end.
Kingeter, of Berkeley, was stabbed dozens of times on Dec. 28, 2012 in the East Oakland apartment that belonged to the mother of Prince's child.
Julius Johnson, a man who was with the Kingeter and Prince in the apartment immediately before the stabbing, failed to show up to testify on Wednesday. Alameda County Judge Jon Rolefson issued a warrant for Johnson's arrest.
