BERKELEY--An on-duty CHP officer and a civilian both suffered moderate injuries in a crash Thursday afternoon on eastbound Interstate 80 in Berkeley, authorities said.

The collision blocked two lanes of the freeway, creating major delays for motorists trying to get out of town for the holiday weekend.

The crash occurred at 3:30 p.m. on I-80, east of the University Avenue exit, said California Highway Patrol Officer Peter VanEckhardt. The CHP officer suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland. The second person was transported to Alta Bates Hospital, also with moderate injuries.

The crash closed the two left lanes of the highway for about two hours, exacerbating the already heavy traffic. All lanes were reopened by 5:30 p.m.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
